NBC apologizes after mistakenly airing wrong Tiger Woods crash footage

NBC missed the putt badly on this one.

The network apologized Saturday after showing the wrong crash footage while providing details on Tiger Woods’ most recent car crash and DUI arrest during its coverage of the Texas Children’s Houston Open, instead showing footage from the 2021 incident in Los Angeles.

“We want to take this time to make a correction,” NBC Sports announcer Dan Hicks said. “Before we came on the air today with our regular PGA Tour coverage of this Texas Children’s Open, our studio show inadvertently showed the incorrect picture of (the) car crash Tiger Woods was in, it was another previous car crash, it was not the correct one, the latest one that was yesterday, so we apologize for that. Just wanted to straighten that out before we go any forward.”

The awkwardness began earlier in the day when Paul Burmeister provided viewers with an update about Woods, who was arrested and charged with DUI after rolling over his car in a crash on Friday in Florida.

The crash marked Woods’ fourth, dating to 2009, and his second time being arrested on DUI charges stemming from one of those crashes.

He had a 2009 accident in Florida, another 2017 arrest in Florida, in which he was arrested on a DUI charge, and a 2021 crash in California.

As Burmeister discussed this recent arrest near Woods’ home in Jupiter Island, the broadcast instead showed clips from the accident in the Los Angeles area.

That footage showed a heavily damaged car off the road in a grassy area.

He suffered notable injuries in that crash, which ultimately required surgery, including an open fracture of his leg and damage to his tibia.

“I’m lucky to be alive and also have a limb,” Woods said in 2021, per ESPN.

While Woods also heavily damaged his car this time, his latest accident happened on a residential road.

Woods, 50, rolled his car Friday around 2 p.m. after he attempted to drive around a flatbed truck, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.

He was arrested on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusing a lawful test being released from jail Friday night.

“Mr. Woods did exemplify the signs of impairment,” Budensiek said.

“At the Martin County jail, and even on scene, we really weren’t suspicious of alcohol being involving in this case, and that proved to be true at the jail. So, Mr. Woods did a Breathalyzer test, blew triple zeroes.”
