The NBA on NBC’s return after two decades away featured a real mic drop.
The opening minutes of the network’s coverage on Tuesday night included a mad dash to replace a microphone that had been hindered by audio issues. It prompted host Maria Taylor and analysts Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady to play pass the mic.
Moments into the opening of “NBA Showtime,” NBC’s pregame show for the Thunder-Rockets opening-night game, McGrady began having issues hearing Taylor before a crackling started as he was talking.
The sound prevented viewers from hearing what McGrady, the former NBA All-Star, was saying. Eventually, a quick-thinking Carter swapped microphones with McGrady, allowing his analysis to finally be heard.

As the group continued to preview the matchup, someone just off-screen handed Taylor a new mic, which was then given to McGrady.
However, the audio issues weren’t over just yet, as moments later, Taylor’s mic cut out as she was attempting to steer the conversation.
“Nah uh, not my mic being out too,” Taylor said after swiping microphones with Anthony when hers stopped working.
The group chuckled, and McGrady stepped in to assure fans that they would work out the small glitches.

“Hey, this is the first night, so it’s not gonna be perfect, NBC family. We gonna get it right,” McGrady said.
“We’re going to get it right,” Taylor also added in the moment.
The issues subsided after the first commercial break as the show avoided any further audio snafus.
Tuesday marked the NBA’s return on NBC for the first time since 2002.
NBA broadcasts returned to the network as part of an 11-year media rights deal that will see NBC pay $2.5 billion per season.
