Nelly Furtado has been making hits for the past two decades, but now the singer has decided to step away from performing in favour of pursuing other creative interests

After more than two decades in the spotlight, a hugely popular singer has announced their decision to step away from performing.

Nelly Furtado has announced she is stepping back from performing “for the foreseeable future”. The I’m Like a Bird hitmaker, 46, shared the news in an emotional Instagram post marking the 25th anniversary of her debut album Whoa, Nelly!

She wrote: “I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life.

“I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”

The Grammy-winning Canadian singer, whose hits include Promiscuous, Maneater, and Say It Right, has spent much of the past year returning to stages around the world after Tiktok fuelled a wave of renewed interest in her music.

Nelly spoke about her unexpected comeback, saying: “To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful. It’s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music. It’s made me really believe in magic.”

In her post, Nelly also expressed gratitude for fans and collaborators who helped her achieve her dreams as a musician. “I’m grateful for all the years of fun, community and wonder,” she wrote.

“Endless gratitude to anyone who has ever listened and vibrated with my music and attended any of my shows. I love you and your open hearts.

“I deeply thank all of those who have worked so hard to help me make my pop dreams come true on a creative and organisational level. I thank all my brilliant collaborators and loyal champions. I also wish, to the new generation of artists, many years of fruitful and passionate performance.”

The singer posted a throwback photo from her early career alongside a video of her recent performance at Berlin’s Citadel Music Festival, writing: “The second slide is me in Berlin this summer finally understanding what receiving flowers means. Thank you and goodnight! Nelly.”

The singer’s decision comes after a busy year of performing. Over the summer, she made headlines for her striking performance at Manchester Pride, where she turned heads in a playful ‘skinny’ optical illusion T-shirt which was emblazoned with the words “Whoa Nelly” in reference to her debut album.

The look was as a cheeky nod to her critics, who had commented on her changing appearance. Nelly previously responded to body-shaming remarks online by promoting body positivity and self-love instead.

At the time, she shared: “This year I became aware of the aesthetic pressure of my work in a brand new way. While simultaneously I experienced new levels of self-love and genuine confidence from within.”
