Newcastle are three games away from a third Wembley final in four years as the Carabao Cup holders breezed past Tottenham in the fourth round.
Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade were on target either side of half-time to secure a deserved win over the Premier League’s third-placed side.
Spurs had their chances, particularly through Richarlison, at St James’ Park but the hosts made light work of the North Londoners, with their excellent form in the competition continuing having not lost a Carabao Cup game since the 2023 final.
Newcastle vs Tottenham as it happened
The hosts had the first chance of the game as Antonin Kinsky got down to deny Malick Thiaw before Anthony Elanga fed Joe Willock, whose shot was well blocked by Rodrigo Bentancur. Jacob Ramsey then maneouvred his way into space but another Spurs body got back to deny the midfielder.
Moments later, Richarlison then burst through on goal but it was Newcastle’s turn to make a good recovery challenge to stop the threat.
A lovely turn from Nick Woltemade then found space for Harvey Barnes on the left but the Newcastle man dragged his finish to Kinsky’s right.
The Magpies were certainly dominant in the first 20 minutes and got a deserved goal a few minutes later when Fabian Schar rose highest to head home from Sandro Tonali’s corner, which felt all too easy for the hosts after some questionable goalkeeping.
Spurs’ best move of the game took until the half-hour mark after an excellent ball from Lucas Bergvall was bizarrely misjudged by Richarlison, who overdid his run and the ball went out of play as a result.
The Brazilian was then too late to get to a ball across goal from Brennan Johnson and he couldn’t quite find the all-important touch. Kevin Danso then let fly from distance but it was straight at Ramsdale.
But then a huge chance came the hosts’ way when Thiaw played a ball across goal before Barnes – who had already missed a huge opportunity – crashed the ball off the crossbar with an overhead kick from seven yards.
There was still time for another big chance for Richarlison before half-time after rising highest to beat Emile Krafth in the air from Palhinha’s cross but he could not find the target.
After the break, Willock spurned a huge chance to double the Magpies’ lead when the former Arsenal man opted to try and find Woltemade with a pass rather than shoot himself.
But Willock did finally lay on his team-mate successful as Kinsky was once again found in no man’s land, allowing Woltemade to head into an empty net.
Spurs pushed for a way back into the game, with Ramsdale called to make multiple stops, the best coming to deny Pape Matar Sarr’s shot after being teed up by Xavi Simons.
