Newcastle swept to a resounding Champions League win at home to Jose Mourinho’s Benfica as Eddie Howe’s squad showed its depth and quality.
Howe chose to rotate some big names and then saw Harvey Barnes step off the bench to score twice and seal the win.
Anthony Gordon put them ahead in a first half which Benfica had the better of.
But after the break the Magpies were electric to climb to an entertaining and deserved victory.
Sandro Tonali, who had been ill in the run-up to the game, was left on the bench alongside Joelinton and Anthony Elanga.
Benfica went close to the opener when Dodi Lukebakio thumped a poost but Gordon was on hand to turn in Jacob Murphy’s low cross and settle the nerves.
Nick Pope then pipcked up an assist when he hurled the ball beyond the halfway line and sub Barnes raced away to shoot in off the foot of the far post.
The win was secured when Gordon steered the ball into Barnes’ path and he scored with ease.
