New Delhi: Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of the Adani Group, led by Gautam Adani, is set to invest $11 billion in airport development over the next five years. As part of this plan, the company is planning to aggressively bid for 11 airports that the government is leasing to the private sector. Currently, Adani Airports manages seven airports in the country. The company is also building a new airport near Mumbai, which is expected to become operational this month. This will be the first airport the company has built from scratch.

Expansion Of Adani Group

The Adani Group has been expanding rapidly. Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) is already the company operating the most airports in India, while the GMR Group is the largest operator in terms of passenger numbers. The central government is leasing some airports to private companies for long periods and is also providing incentives for building new airports.

The Company’s IPO

The government aims to build 350 to 400 airports in the country by 2047, compared to the current 163. Earlier this year, the government announced a plan to lease 11 airports. These include Amritsar, Varanasi, Kushinagar, Gaya, Bhubaneswar, Hubli, Kangra, Raipur, Tiruchirappalli, Aurangabad, and Tirupati.

AAHL Director Jeet Adani recently said in an interview that the company will bid for all 11 airports. Jeet Adani stated that there is no fixed timeline for listing AAHL publicly, adding that an IPO or demerger would only happen when certain specific targets are achieved.

Jeet Adani clarified that the company has no plans to enter the airline business. He said that the profit margins in the airline business are very low. He added, “Running an airline requires a specific mindset. I don’t think we have that mindset. Our strength and our core competence lie in building hard assets on the ground, operating long-term assets, and managing them very efficiently.”
