Noel Fielding has admitted his Great British Bake Off co-host Alison Hammond broke a strict set rule when she joined the show that forced her to “learn the hard way”

Noel Fielding has revealed his Great British Bake Off co-presenter Alison Hammond fell foul of a crucial on-set rule after “learning the hard way”. The duo have fronted the beloved baking programme together since Alison replaced Matt Lucas in 2023.

Having already completed six series by then, Noel was well-versed in one cardinal rule that everyone working on the production must observe. The Channel 4 programme, celebrated for its vibrant presentations, mouth-watering creations and legendary marquee, offers a visual treat for viewers.

However, despite the kitchen appearing laden with tempting confections, nearly everything is completely forbidden, Noel has disclosed. Journalist Boudicca Fox Leonard visited the renowned tent at Welford Park in Berkshire to discover what goes on behind the scenes of the popular show, which debuted in 2010.

There’s one golden rule that everyone on the Bake Off set must obey. Both cast and crew receive a firm warning: “Don’t eat the displays.” This applies even though the set appears “as delectable as cricket cream tea” in the journalist’s words.

She reported that the 52 year old Noel issued this caution while she was “eyeing up the set dressing of sponge fingers, party rings and jars of marshmallows”. The host stated: “They are not to be touched. Alison found that out the hard way,” reports the Manchester Evening News.

Much of what’s on show isn’t actually fit for consumption, with certain pieces constructed from polystyrene. Other items have been sitting around for extended periods – weeks, months or potentially years – serving purely aesthetic purposes, with the presenter strongly discouraging any sampling of the decorative elements.

When asked about the authenticity of some tantalising hot cross buns on display, Noel had a valid reason for not indulging: “They are real. But feel them – they’re like rock. You’d need gnashers like a nutcracker to eat them.”

Even the edible props aren’t spared once the cameras stop rolling. A crew member revealed to a reporter: “We have to put all the real stuff away at night because the squirrels come and eat it otherwise.”

Noel and Alison are back in action for The Great Celebrity Bake Off, raising funds for Stand Up to Cancer. Celebs joining the baking battle include Molly-Mae Hague and JoJo Siwa. The show began last Sunday with other famous faces such as former I’m A Celeb winner Vicky Pattison, radio host Scott Mills and Ralf Little.

Alison, who has been a presenter for the past three Bake Off series, quickly won over judges, contestants and viewers alike with her bubbly personality. The This Morning host brought a new zest to the Bake Off tent during her debut series.

Despite being a newcomer to the beloved Bake Off franchise, Alison is no stranger to culinary TV shows. She’s graced the screens on Celebrity MasterChef and has also hosted cooking segments on daytime programmes.

She confessed to feeling a bit jittery about becoming part of such a cherished programme. Upon landing the Bake Off role, she expressed: “It’s a massive privilege to be part of an iconic show.” Besides Bake Off and This Morning, Alison has also tested her mettle on various reality shows like I’m A Celeb and Strictly Come Dancing.
