A new landmark is emerging in Tokyo’s Odaiba area, where a massive installation has been constructed on the waters of Tokyo Bay. The structure, which had sparked curiosity among visitors during its setup, will begin operations as the “Tokyo Aqua Symphony,” one of the largest fountain shows in the world.
The attraction features water jets reaching heights of around 150 meters, alongside a 250-meter-wide display inspired by Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, the official flower of Tokyo, creating an immersive visual experience.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said revitalizing the waterfront subcenter remains a key priority for the metropolitan government, adding that strategic investment and effective utilization of such facilities are essential to boosting the area’s appeal.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, total development costs reached approximately 2.64 billion yen, with the economic ripple effect estimated at around 9.8 billion yen.
A test run held a day earlier drew large crowds of tourists, many of whom captured the spectacle on camera, with some likening the display to fireworks rising from the ground.
On its opening day, the show will run for about 10 minutes at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., before shifting to hourly performances from 11 a.m. daily.
Meanwhile, another major development opening the same day is Takanawa Gateway City, a fully operational complex featuring luxury dining, shopping, and live entertainment spaces.
Attention is also turning to Oimachi, two stations away, where a new mixed-use facility called “OIMACHI TRACKS” will open directly connected to JR Oimachi Station.
The complex integrates approximately 80 retail outlets along with a hotel, combining commercial and hospitality functions in a single development.
Inside the facility, one highlight is Pichi Pichi Meat Farm, a specialty butcher offering premium Kagoshima-sourced Satsuma beef, including top-grade wagyu cuts. The shop emphasizes freshness, serving meat immediately after cutting and offering barbecue experiences at an outdoor grilling area.
Visitors can enjoy freshly cut selections such as chateaubriand, grilled on-site to capture the meat at its peak flavor.
JR East Marketing Headquarters official Takao Nakano said the facility also aims to incorporate popular local businesses from the Oimachi area, promoting a model of coexistence with the surrounding community and enhancing the district’s overall appeal.
Among them is Onigiri Togoshiya, a well-known shop from the nearby Togoshi Ginza shopping street, which prepares rice balls to order with generous fillings.
At the Oimachi Tracks location, a limited menu allows customers to create their own custom onigiri by selecting and combining their preferred ingredients.
The hands-on experience, which includes options such as spicy cod roe, salmon, tarako, and wasabi, enables visitors to craft personalized rice balls, adding to the appeal of the facility.
Togoshiya representative Eiji Kimoto expressed hopes that the new location would encourage more visitors to explore both Oimachi and the original Togoshi store, contributing to broader regional revitalization.
In addition, the facility features a unique sauna designed by JR East, complete with train-style seating and hand straps, offering views of a nearby rail yard, allowing guests to enjoy the sight of passing trains while relaxing.
OIMACHI TRACKS is scheduled to open at 11 a.m. on March 28th, marking another addition to Tokyo’s lineup of spring attractions.
