Bhubaneswar: A young man lost his life in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Thursday after jumping into the Salandi river to record a social media reel. The incident unfolded around 10 AM near Santia bridge.
According to police, two youths — identified as Himanshu Sekhar Nayak and Mithun Nayak — leapt into the river while a companion filmed the act. While Himanshu managed to swim back to safety, Mithun was swept away by the strong current. His body was recovered more than two hours later following an extensive search by fire service personnel.
Officials said the deceased sustained severe injuries to the head and neck. Police detained the individual who was recording the video at the time of the tragedy.
The incident has sparked alarm among residents, many of whom voiced concern over the dangers of performing stunts for social media views. “Young people are risking their lives for likes and shares. This must stop,” said one local observer.
Authorities have urged greater awareness and caution, stressing that such reckless acts not only endanger lives but also place heavy demands on emergency services.
