TEHRAN – Amirmahdi Alavai, spokesperson of the Football Federation of Iran, has announced that the planned friendly match between Iran and Spain has been canceled.

According to reports, two weeks ago Alavai stated that the Iranian federation had reached a final agreement with the Royal Spanish Football Federation to organize a friendly against the Spain national football team during the June FIFA international window.

The agreement was reportedly worth $1.3 million, and the match was scheduled to be held at Estadio Riazor in La Coruña. However, the fixture has now been officially called off.

“The contract was on the verge of being signed when suddenly they informed us that they could not play the match. This is the first time we have seen everything finalized — even the date and venue — and then receive an email saying they are unable to hold the game,” Alavai said.

He added that Spain proposed playing during the September FIFA window instead, but Iran had planned to face Spain as part of their preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

As a result, Iran must now seek an alternative opponent for the June international break.
