Olympiacos won its ninth consecutive Greek Cup.
In a thrilling final, Olympiacos edged out Panathinaikos 13:12 to clinch the Greek Cup for the 27th time in history.
The Final Four was held in Vari, a southern suburb of Athens. Olympiacos advanced to the final after defeating Apollon Smyrnis 15:8 in the semifinals, while Panathinaikos overcame Panionios, 15:11.
Panathinaikos was the better team in the first half, taking a 2-goal lead three times (3:1, 6:4, 7:5). At halftime, only a goal separated the rivals – 7:6.
Olympacos gained momentum after the 5-minute break. It went ahead for the first time – at 8:7 and again at 9:8. Still, at the finish of the third quarter, Panathinaikos scored two goals and headed into the final eight minutes with a 10:9 lead. Midway through the final quarter, Olympiacos earned an 11:10 advantage, but Panathinaikos responded with two. Less than two minutes before the end, the “Green and Whites” had a 12:11 lead.
Both head coaches, Dimitrios Mazis of Panathinaikos and Elvis Fatovic of Olympiacos, received red cards in a tense finish, so they could not lead their teams in the final two minutes.
Olympiacos handled the crucial moments better. Gergo Zalanki equalized at 12:12 with a man-up in the 31st minute, and Konstantinos Genidounias scored a winner for 13:12 with just 19 seconds left on the clock.
Genidounias, who netted five goals in the gold-medal match, was voted the MVP of the tournament. Gergo Zalanki found the net four times in the final. Papasifakis and Skoumpakis were Panathinaikos’s best scorers with three goals each.
