OpenAI made a big announcement for India: You can get ChatGPT Go for free for one year, starting November 4th. Here is what you get and how to sign up for the free offer.
OpenAI is targeting India’s large internet population by making the premium service ChatGPT Go free for a year from 4 November 2025. The offer is valid for all Indian users and applies to the usually paid subscription level – which is priced at approximately ₹399 (~US$4.50) per month.
What is ChatGPT Go and what’s on offer?
ChatGPT Go is a middle-ground between the free ChatGPT service and the higher-tier “Plus” plan. Reportedly, Go plan users get increased usage quotas (roughly 10× the free limit), file upload for analysis, image generation, and better conversation memory or context retention.
Eligible Indian users will just need to log into their account and redeem the offer from 4 November. Current Go-subscribers will also get the 12-month free subscription added to their account.
Why India? Why now?
India is one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets and has more than 700 million smartphone users, and a rapidly growing demand for AI products. But converting users to the paid versions has been difficult: while many use the free tier, there have not been many takers for the paid plans. Freeing up Go is an attempt to drive mass adoption of the higher-level features and also entrench Indian users into OpenAI’s platform.
It is also a more competitive market, with rivals like Perplexity teaming with Indian telcos to offer users their premium AI features free and Google recently offering its “AI Pro” plan free for a year to students.
India is also stepping up its AI regulation and oversight, and the timing is key for international firms looking to establish a foothold there.
What should users in India do to claim it?
On or after 4 November 2025, just log into ChatGPT, via the app or web portal.
If you’re eligible (have an India-based account), you should see an option to redeem and activate the 12-month free Go subscription. You shouldn’t need to provide any payment details for the promotional period, but it’s a good idea to check the terms in case auto-renewal kicks in after 12 months.
Get the most out of the higher limits, file-upload/image-generation, etc. and experiment while it lasts.
What this means and what to watch?
This is a great chance for Indian users to test out what they can do with the premium ChatGPT features for free for a year. It also sets a precedent for other international AI platforms to consider pricing and bundling their products/services for India’s price-conscious users.
From OpenAI’s point of view, it is hoped that users will get used to using Go’s features and may continue on paid plans when the 12-month period is over. But will this work as hoped and lead to subscription revenue? To be seen.
Further, with such broad free access, data privacy, content moderation, and ethical use of AI issues might also come to the fore. With India’s upcoming rules on AI, how OpenAI (others) respond will be a key point to watch.
