An Academy Award-winner has delighted fans after they were spotted in a French restaurant, with many saying it’s a rare sighting of ‘one of the greatest living actors’
An Oscar-winning actor who was spotted in France has delighted fans as they didn’t expect the appearance. Fans of the cinema legend were left hailing the sighting and called the star “one of the greatest living actors”. Others were delighted to point out the classic restaurant the star had been spotted in, with the meal appearing to have taken place over the weekend.
Some used the appearance as a chance to point out the star, who featured in the likes of The Dark Knight and The Big Hustle was actually English, not American as his films may make some believe. One person wrote: “My favourite is when people realise he is not American!”
Whether people in the comments of the r/popculturechat realised that or not, they were in no doubt about seeing Christian Bale appear at Brasserie Lipp in Paris, France.
Another fan added: “It took my forever to figure out he wasn’t American. Heard him talk once in an interview and I was floored.”
A third shared: “I think it was at some award ceremony that people first heard his natural accent and it was all jaws to the floor.”
Some fans were also left confused as to whether the actor had an English or Welsh accent, which he explained in an interview in 2019.
Bale, who picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Fighter, confirmed he practiced an American accent to keep up appearances.
He said: “But what was interesting was a lot of them got it very wrong and they go, ‘listen to his Welsh accent’. Yes, I was born in Wales but I don’t think I’ve got any ring of Welsh in my accent at all.”
Others took the time to praise Bale’s performances from the last few decades. One person wrote: “My wife and I just watched The Machinist last night.
“Besides being like ‘WTF’ in general while watching it, we also couldn’t believe the physical transformation he made for that film.”
Another added: “And went to Batman physique a year later: ‘For the part as Batman, Bale regained the weight he lost for The Machinist and built muscle, weighing 220 pounds (100 kg).’
“I’m generally not a big fan of actors going through physical transformations. But Bale is so insanely committed with it that it’s clear he’s doing it for the love of the game rather than trying to score PR points for awards season.”
Brasserie Lipp opened 144 years ago in the sixth arrondissement of Paris.
A description of the restaurant on their website reads: “Since 1880, Lipp has welcomed you every day with continuous service, serving classic French dishes. An institution that embodies elegance and conviviality.
“It has stood the test of generations without losing its character and authenticity. Lipp continues to be an essential meeting place for gourmets.”
