After shining throughout the awards season, KPop Demon Hunters scored a historic victory at the 98th Academy Awards. Korean-Canadian filmmaker Maggie Kang, who directed the film, made history by becoming the first individual of South Korean descent to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. This is also a rare occasion when a non-Disney or Pixar animated film has won in the category. Previously, Spirited Away and Shrek have been the notable winners in a category where winners from production houses other than Disney are a rarity.

Furthermore, the film picked a major win when the song Golden became the first K-pop track to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The team appeared emotional while accepting both awards. During the Oscars ceremony, the singers also performed Golden live.

KPop Demon Hunters follows a K-pop girl group, Huntrix, who lead double lives as demon hunters. They face off with Saja Boys, a rival boy band, whose members are secretly demons.

While accepting the award for Best Animated feature, Kang said, “To all the fans who got us here and for those of you who look like me, sorry that it took us so long to see us in a movie like this. This is for Korea and Koreans everywhere.”

Singer EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami later returned on stage with the team to accept the award for Golden. EJAE said, “Growing up, people made fun of me for liking K-pop and now they are singing our song. This award is not about success, it is about resilience.’ However, their speech was cut short when the exit music began to play. The moment did not sit well with many viewers. Within seconds, X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with reactions from fans who expressed frustration over the speech being cut short.

“Personally I wanted I Lied To You but the KPop Demon Hunters team earned that moment! That shit was incredibly disrespectful,” wrote one user, while another added, “K-pop demon hunters crew getting their victory speech cut short while Amy madigan got 2 minutes to ramble is so fuckin’ disrespectful”

A separate comment read, “I don’t like how they cut off the Kpop Demon Hunters Cast. That was nasty #Oscars”

Upon its release, KPop Demon Hunters became a huge success globally, and now streaming giant Netflix has confirmed that it will be coming back for a sequel.
