Oscars 2026: Neeraj Ghaywans Homebound Shortlisted in The Best International Feature Film Category

Team Homebound is a step closer to turning its Oscar dream into a reality. The Neeraj Ghaywan directorial has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards 2026 in the Best International Feature Film category, placing it among 15 selected from submissions by 86 countries.

With this announcement, Homebound has cleared a crucial stage in the Oscar race, and the next step is the nomination round. Academy members are required to watch all 15 films before proceeding to vote for the final five nominees. Some other films that have been shortlisted are Palestine 36 from Palestine, The Voice of Hind Rajab from Tunisia, No Other Choice from South Korea and The Secret Agent from Brazil.

Producer Karan Johar took to social media to express his gratitude and wrote, “I am not sure I can articulate how proud, elated and over the moon I am with the journey of #HOMEBOUND… all of us @dharmamovies are privileged to have this proud and important film in our filmography … thank you @neeraj.ghaywan for making so many dreams of ours come true… from Cannes to being on the Oscar shortlist this has been such an overwhelming journey! Neeraj Ghaywan, and the cast Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa, too, got quite emotional. Congratulatory messages also poured in from people across the industry, including Farah Khan, Aditi Rao Hydari, Zoya Akhtar, Guneet Monga and more.

Homebound is inspired by Basharat Peer’s 2020 New York Times article and was released in India on September 26, 2025. It follows childhood friends Shoaib (Ishaan) and Chandan (Vishal), whose shared dream of joining the police force shapes their lives, with Janhvi adding emotional depth to a story grounded in friendship, duty, and the pressures facing young India.
