The Academy Awards 2026 saw some huge wins following a tense race in which Sinners broke the record for the most Oscars nominations with 16 nods

The 2026 Oscars is already a great night for several films, as the winners are announced. Kicking off the show, Amy Madigan won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Weapons. This was the first Oscar for the star, who is aged 75.

The actress played Aunt Gladys in the horror film. She was up against Teyana Taylor, IngaIbsdotter Lilleaas, Wunmi Mosaku and Elle Fanning. She shouted them out in her speech, as well as her husband, Ed Harris. Though Ed has not won an Oscar, he has been nominated four times.

KPop Demon Hunters took the second award. The hit animated film has also been nominated for several awards, including Best Song, but has won Best Animated Film. Frankenstein, which was a bigger winner in the technical nominations, took home the Costume Design award and the prize for Make Up and Hair.

The big winner of the night is already Sinners. The horror film follows 1930s twins Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, as they are confronted with a supernatural evil as they return their home town in the USA South. It was nominated in 16 categories this year, breaking the record for the most nominations taken by a film. The record had previously been held by La La Land, Titanic and All About Eve, which all held 14 nominations.

It is expected to be a good night for One Battle After Another too, as the film is not only a favourite for Best Picture, but its director, Paul Thomas Anderson, is a favourite to take home the Best Director Award.

Jessie Buckley is also thought to be in for a good night, as she has swept the awards leading up to the Oscars. Jessie is nominated for Best Actress for her role as Agnes in Hamnet.

While Timothee Chalamet was a favourite to take home the Best Actor win for his role as Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme, his odds have been slashed. The actor gave a town hall before the Oscars voting closed where he said “no one cares” about opera and ballet. His words became a huge controversy online, which many believe may have tanked his chances of taking home the award.
