More than 13,000 people have signed a petition to save 51 dairy cows from a farm in Jersey, a small island in the English Channel that belongs to the British Isles.

At the beginning of February, Blanc Pignon Dairy Farm in Jersey announced it was closing after about 80 years of operation.

Alice Le Cras, a director at the farm, said they hoped local farmers would take the cows. The animals would keep producing milk before eventually being sent to slaughter.

The Animal Justice Project (AJP), an animal protection group in the United Kingdom, started the petition.

Send cows to sanctuary

The petition asks Le Cras to let the cows retire at Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk, England. The sanctuary already looks after over 750 rescued cows. It has offered a permanent home to the “Jersey 51” if the farm agrees.

“The farm’s future may be sealed, but the cows can still be saved,” AJP said.

The campaign has gained attention beyond the petition. British actor Peter Egan, known for TV shows like Downton Abbey, has publicly supported giving the dairy cows from Jersey a safe home at Hillside.

Animal rights groups say dairy cows have a tough life in the industry. They are often killed when they stop producing milk. In a sanctuary, these cows could live 20 to 25 years, grazing and resting.
