Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday said Pakistan receiving credit for the US–Israel ceasefire was the ‘biggest failure’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning why India, which aspires to be a Vishwaguru, was not leading peace negotiations. He also called for the resignation of Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar from their positions.
In a post on X, Raut said that Pakistan had sent a message of peace to the world by helping stop the conflict. He questioned why Modi, often referred to by BJP supporters as a ‘Mahavishwaguru,’ did not receive credit for the development.
“Pakistan has given a message of peace to the world by stopping the war between Iran and America. Why didn’t our Mahavishwaguru get this credit? Because Mahavishwaguru has no role. There is a war going on in the world and our Mahavishwaguru was throwing verbal bombs at political opponents in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu,” he said.
Later speaking to the media, Raut expressed concern over Pakistan receiving credit for the ceasefire. “The credit for the ceasefire is being attributed to Pakistan, whereas that credit ought to have gone to India, to the ‘Vishwuguru.’ Why did we not host them and speak of peace?”
“A peace meeting is scheduled to take place in Islamabad. Weren’t you the ones who vowed to capture Islamabad and hoist the BJP flag there? This is a matter of shame for India; it is a matter of shame for the Government of India. Modi has no business remaining in power. These people did nothing but talk on the phone; they were acting like mere telephone operators. Jaishankar ought to resign. You are underestimating your adversary,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.
Commenting on the nature of the conflict, Raut praised Iran for standing up to global superpowers like the US and Israel. He noted that Iran did not surrender despite 35 days of intense conflict.
Referring to S Jaishankar’s previous comments labelling Pakistan a ‘broker’ nation, Raut pointed out the irony of Donald Trump thanking that very same nation for its diplomatic efforts.
The BJP hit back at Raut calling him ‘Pakistan’s agent.’ “Consistently adopting an anti-national stand to act as a mouthpiece for Pakistan has become Raut’s habit,” said BJP spokesperson Navnath Ban.
