Panathinaikos, Marseille and Oradea survive dramas to reach Euro Cup Top 8

Radnicki, Jadran Split, BVSC, Sabadell, Oradea, Marseille, and Panathinaikos have reached the quarterfinals of the Euro Cup.

Jadran Split, Radnicki, and Sabadell were already very close to securing their spots in the quarterfinals after the first leg, making their today’s 2nd leg matches more or less a formality.

However, most of the other games in the second leg were quite exciting.

Panathinaikos secured its quarterfinal berth after a penalty shootout. Jadran Herceg Novi defeated Panathinaikos at home 18:17 in the return game, overcoming a deficit from Athens (where it lost 10:11). Nevertheless, the Greeks performed better in the shootout, winning 5:4, and advanced to the Round of 8.

Marseille and Savona played to a 13:13 tie in France, but Marseille celebrated at the end, having won 12:11 in Italy.

There was no winner in the second match between Terrassa and Oradea, which ended in a 14:14 draw. However, the Romanians advanced due to a 14:13  home victory.

BVSC eliminated its Budapest rival Vasas. After losing the first game by three goals (8:11), BVSC achieved a convincing 20:13 victory today.

Jadran Split triumphed over Szolnok for the second time, winning 21:14 after a previous away victory of 15:10.

Radnicki recorded a double win, like Jadran Split. The Kragujevac-based team defeated Barcelona at home, 17:15, for a seven-goal victory in an aggregate score (Radnicki won 15:10 in Spain).

Sabadell lost to Sabac 6:9, but demolished Sabac at home 11:3.

The list of quarterfinalists will be complete on March 14, after the return game between Jug and Primorac in Zagreb (Primorac won 14:13 in the 1st match).

2026 Euro Cup, Eighth-finals, Leg 2

Jadran Herceg Novi – Panathinaikos 22:22 ( 6:6, 2:3, 5:5, 5:3, PSO 4:5) – 1st leg 10:11

Jadran Herceg Novi: Janovic 7, Valera 4, Gojkovic 3, V.Radovic 2, Vujovic 1, Merkulov 1.

A high-scoring game in Herceg Novi featured many twists and turns, but neither team could establish a 3-goal lead. Panathinaikos started well, taking a 2:0 lead. However, Jadran responded with a 4:1 run for 4:3. At the first break, the teams were tied at 6:6. Just 28 seconds before the end of the first half, Panathinaikos managed to regain a 2-goal lead at 9:7, but Radovic reduced Jadran’s deficit with a goal 25 seconds later.

In the middle of the third period, Jadran took the lead at 12:11. The Greeks quickly responded with three goals, putting them ahead again at 14:12. They maintained this two-goal lead until the 28th minute, when Jadran went on a 3:0 run, going 17:16 in front. Panathinaikos equalized at 17:17 in the 30th minute.

Srdjan Janovic kept Jadran’s hopes alive by converting a man-up with 18 seconds left on the clock, making it 18:17 and prolonging the match to a shootout. However, after six rounds of shots, Panathinaikos emerged victorious and qualified for the quarterfinals. Oradea led for most of the match in Terrassa, but it barely saved a one-goal advantage earned in the home match.

Oradea built a 3-goal lead already in the first quarter (5:2). But, Terrassa quickly caught up with the Romanians and leveled at 5:5 and again at 6:6 early in the second period. Late into the second quarter, the Romanians went ahead 8:6. Still, early in the third, Terrassa equalized once again 8:8. Three and a half minutes before the end, Levante Vancsik gave Oradea a 14:10 lead, and it seemed that the contest was over. Still, Terrassa managed to pull another comeback, with four straight goals. Twelve seconds before the end, Blasco leveled at 14:14. Oradea kept the ball and the ticket for the quarterfinals in a tense finish.

Marseille – Savona 13:13 (3:3, 5:5, 4:2, 1:4) –  1st leg 12:11

Marseille dominated in the first quarter and a half, but after that, the French struggled to prevent Savona’s comeback attempts.

The hosts rushed to a 7:2 lead in the first 13th minutes. Occhione made it 3:7 immediately after Marseille’s 7th goal. However, Crousillat replied to restore the home team’s five-goal lead. But, not for long, as Savona, led by Oliver Leinweber, reduced the gap to 7:8 by the end of the first half. The Hungarian leveled at 8:8 in the 18th minute. Midway through the third period, the hosts scored three goals in two minutes for 11:8. At the finish of the quarter, Ugo Crousillat increased Marseille’s lead to 12:8. Lorenzo Bruni closed this period.

Crousillat added the fifth goal to his tally in Marseille’s first possession in the final period (13:9). The hosts didn’t score a single goal in the last 07:42 minutes. However, they defended well for a while. In the last two minutes, Savona scored three goals, but it leveled when it was too late, just eight seconds before the end.

BVSC managed to overcome a 3-goal deficit from the 1st leg and to build a big advantage in the middle of the game. BVSC led for most of the first half, but Vasas chased it for a long time. In the 15th minute, Vasas trailed 7:8. But, then BVSC started dominating. The hosts scored three goals in the last 65 seconds of the first half and went to 11:7. They kept their momentum after the middle break and added three more goals, establishing a 14:7 lead in the 19th minute.

Vasas started recovering and coming back in the match by scoring three consecutive goals to cut their deficit to 10:14. Still, they couldn’t reduce the gap further, as BVSC replied with a 3:0 run, went to 17:10, and maintained a 7-goal difference until the end.

Jadran Split – Szolnok 21:14 (6:3, 3:0, 7:6, 5:5) – 1st leg 15:10

The outcome of this pair was practically decided in the first match in Szolnok.  In Split, Jadran got off to a flying start, leaving no chance to Szolnok. The hosts had a 6:2 lead midway through the first quarter. At halftime, Jadran had a 9:3 advantage. The Croatian champion slowed down after the middle break, but its advantage never fell below five goals, even though it conceded too many goals.

Radnicki – Barcelona 17:15 (5:3, 5:3, 4:3, 3:6)

Sabac finished its European season with a consolation win over Sabadell. However, the Serbs were not close to endangering Sabadell’s 8-goal advantage from the first match.
