Pep Guardiola says that every passing season is more difficult to compete at the top of the Premier League table.

Manchester City face champions Liverpool on Sunday still hoping to haul in Arsenal, who start the weekend with a six-point lead.

Guardiola, 55, has lifted the title six times but says it is getting more difficult all the time to win.

He said: “Every season it is getting more difficult but I think not just for us, for all the teams.

“We are improving in moments, we just need some more consistency then we will be there.

“So 14 games left, in the Premier League is an eternity. In my experience, it’s a lot and anything can happen.

“Last season in the Premier League we were miles away from Liverpool, so let’s see if we will be there.”

Guardiola was asked about his future but simply stated that he has a year left on his contract.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has won over 30 honours in his managerial career and this week secured another League Cup final place.

He said: “If you want to be a manager it is better to win trophies, always. You do not always have the chance to play nice football. I think everything is related because as a manager when you win you almost always play good.

“You want your players to win it in the best way for the players you have, to play the way in your soul you believe in. I do think this is the most important thing.”
