A man has been charged after he allegedly doused himself in an accelerant and set his car alight when a police pursuit came to an end in Gosnells earlier this year.
Police allege the man was involved in a high-speed chase through Perth’s south-eastern suburbs just before 3pm on January 14.
The maroon Holden Commodore had allegedly failed to stop for police before the pursuit began, with the chase later called off.
But police later caught up with the car and were following it when it became bogged near Railway Avenue and Camillo Road, and traffic was brought to a standstill as officers confronted the driver.
“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was then observed dousing himself with an accelerant,” A WA Police spokeswoman said at the time.
“Police negotiated with the man, and the man exited the vehicle. The vehicle then caught alight.
“Police pulled the driver away from the vehicle and immediately rendered first aid to the man.”
Two officers were injured in the same incident when trying to help the man, and were treated and later released from Armadale Hospital.
The 33-year-old was taken to intensive care at Fiona Stanley Hospital, and was charged with several offences this week.
A WA Police spokesman said the man has been charged with two counts of being a driver of a vehicle that failed to comply with a direction to stop, reckless driving to escape police, and one count of “with intent to cause grievous bodily harm or prevent arrest, cast, threw or otherwise applied corrosive fluid or any destructive or explosive substance”.
He will appear in Armadale Magistrates Court on March 24.
