New Delhi: After purchasing the BrahMos missile from India, the Philippines has deployed it facing China. A video has been released by the Philippines showcasing the deadly BrahMos anti-ship cruise missile. This is the first time the Philippines has publicly displayed the BrahMos missile. According to reports, the Philippine Marine Corps has reportedly unveiled a new anti-ship missile unit equipped with BrahMos cruise missiles.

In the released video, each launcher was seen equipped with two BrahMos missiles, while the reloading carrier held four additional missiles. The Philippine Coastal Defence Regiment has stated that each Philippine Marine Corps BrahMos battery will consist of two mobile autonomous launchers, a radar vehicle, a missile reloader, and a command-and-control truck.

China’s Fujian Aircraft Carrier

The Philippines released this video as China commissioned its latest Fujian aircraft carrier into the Navy at a ceremony held in Sanya, Hainan Province, in the South China Sea. The induction of this Chinese-built flattop aircraft carrier into the Navy is seen as a major advancement in the capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army Navy. The Philippines signed a US$375 million deal with India for three batteries of the shore-based, anti-ship variant of the BrahMos missile. The Philippines is the second country, besides India, to use the BrahMos missile.

First batch delivered in 2024, second batch in April 2025

The first batch of BrahMos missiles was delivered to the Philippines by India in 2024, while the second batch arrived in April 2025. The third batch is reported to be delivered next month. The Philippine Marine Corps has deployed the BrahMos missile at the naval base in Zambales, just 220 km from Scarborough Shoal. This is the same area that China occupied in 2012. This strategic distance is within the missile’s 290 km range, meaning that if necessary, Chinese coast guard or militia boats could be directly targeted.

China cannot intercept the BrahMos missile

The BrahMos’s greatest strength is its speed. Furthermore, it has a 200–300 kg warhead capacity, which prevents the enemy from retaliating. Its terminal flight profile is at a very low altitude (just 10 meters), making it nearly impossible to detect on radar. This is why it is being called a game-changer. China does not have any air defence system capable of intercepting the BrahMos. Former Philippine Defence Minister Delfin Lorenzana also acknowledged that the missile is a “deterrent against any attempt to challenge the Philippines’ sovereignty.”
