Pierre Gasly has opened up about the sense of relief he felt when he was demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso in 2019.
The Frenchman, currently driving for Alpine, entered his rookie Formula 1 season with Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls) in 2018 after joining the Red Bull Junior Team in 2014.
After completing his rookie season, finishing 15th place in the drivers’ standings and 25 points ahead of his team-mate at the time, Brendon Hartley, Gasly secured a contract with Red Bull for 2019.
But, as with many of Max Verstappen’s team-mates in recent years, Gasly found himself demoted back to Toro Rosso and replaced by Alex Albon ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.
The 29-year-old driver discussed his move from Red Bull to Toro Rosso during an interview with F1.com.
“I’m not going to lie, it was sad,” he said. “2019, my second year in Formula 1 – there was no support from anywhere, in a very big team which is very much supporting Max [Verstappen] – for good reasons, because he’s put on the results.

“But I’m starting with a fresh engineer coming from Formula E who didn’t have experience in F1. So it was a strange dynamic. I wasn’t really given the tools to really perform. I tried to fight my own way because I wanted, and at the end of the day I’m there to perform. They were not happy, but I’m not happy too because I could see I couldn’t show my potential.
“It almost felt like a relief.”
Describing how it felt to return to the track for his first race back with Toro Rosso, he added: “It’s not a nice energy. I’m there to do my thing and try and give my best but it’s a lot of negativity. I go through that. I just want to drive.”
