Hyderabad: Online betting is also hollowing out the morals of young policemen, who were supposed to be the steel frame of the country. While a sub-inspector pledged the service revolver to clear debits due to online betting, two policemen died by suicide by shooting with their weapons.

On Sunday, an Armed Reserve police constable, Krishna Chaitanya, attempted to end his life after he lost money in online betting. He quarrelled with his family members and had been staying away from his family for the past few months.

A senior officer said it was shocking to know that the police are violating the law. “There is a need to provide proper training and counselling for those who are addicted to illegal activities, which crippled their lives.”

A constable in Sangareddy stole a weapon from a store room by opening the store room key and died by suicide, shooting himself a few months ago. The police officials found that the constable had faced a financial loss due to online betting.

Sandeep Kumar, the 2024 batch constable, was working as a constable at Sangareddy police station. He was addicted to online betting, and borrowed lakhs of rupees from his relatives and friends.

Unable to bear the pressure from them to repay the debts, he died by suicide on November 3, 2025, by shooting himself with a revolver on the embankment of the Mahabubsagar lake in Sangareddy.

In another incident, the Amberpet sub-inspector Bhanu Prakash, who lost up to Rs 80 lakh due to online betting, pledged his service weapon for money to clear debits. Sources said that the senior officials are still inquiring into the incident.
