The gram panchayat elections on Thursday witnessed several strange incidents and noteworthy contests.

Thimmaipally, Korutla mandal, Jagtial: Sumalatha, backed by the Congress, defeated her mother Shivarathri Gangavva, supported by the BRS, by 91 votes. The panchayat is reserved for BC women. Sources said there was a dispute between the two.

Gokul Chinna thanda, Ramareddy mandal, Kamareddy: Voters boycotted polling, demanding panchayat status for their habitation of 90 houses. They said previous sarpanches, elected from Gokul Pedda thanda, were ignoring their village. They said they would participate in mandal and zilla parishad territorial constituency elections scheduled for later.

Venkatapur, Korutla mandal of Jagtial district: Venkataiah, 72, allegedly chewed and swallowed the white-coloured ballot paper meant to elect ward members, while under the influence of alcohol. He left the booth while chewing the pink-coloured slip meant to elect the sarpanch, when he was noticed by election officials. He was handed over to the police who booked a case.

Lingoli thanda, Utnoor mandal in Adilabad district: A wife and husband were elected as sarpanch and upa sarpanch.
