El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele is calling for help to protect the country’s thousands of stray animals.

He posted on social media: “Thousands of dogs and cats live on our streets. We want to change that, but without cruelty. We have the financial resources, but we seek expert partners to make it a model for Latin America. Who wants to come and help us?”

The post received wide attention. Animal lovers, veterinarians, and activists from around the world reacted, including Irish dog rescuer Niall Harbison, who said he wants to be involved.

Harbison is known for his street dog work in Thailand, Bali, and Sri Lanka. In the past two years, his team has funded the sterilization of 130,000 dogs.

His charity Happy Doggo focuses on CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return), education, and policy change to reduce the suffering of street animals.

In response to Bukele’s call, Harbison said: “The mission in my lifetime is to half the street dog population from 500 million to 250 million globally. This can only be done with CNVR, legislation changes and education.”

“I’ve always been looking for a country to partner with so we can prove a private/public partnership. Make it the best in class so other countries can copy and roll it out.”

He added that he is ready to fly to El Salvador as early as next week if the government is serious about large-scale change for street animals.

Harbison stressed the urgency of acting fast, saying: “The dogs suffer immensely. This needs to happen globally, very, very fast.”

El Salvador has the same problem as many countries in Latin America. Many cats and dogs live on the streets without anyone to take care of them.

You can see dogs sleeping on the roads, crossing busy streets with many cars, or looking for food in the trash near markets. Most of them are hungry, sick, or hurt. They are always searching for food and water.
