The Goiania accident that happened in 1987 still remains as one of the deadliest incidents of all times. For the unversed, it was a radioactive accident which took the lives of a few innocents. Well, the recently released Netflix show, Radioactive Emergency revisits the chilling story. The docudrama, created by Gustavo Lipsztein and starring Tuca Andrada, Antonio Saboia, Bukassa Kabengele and more hit the OTT giant on March 18, 2026. Amid the buzz around it, read on to know the ending of the series.
What happens in Radioactive Emergency?
The series opens in a closed and abandoned medical clinic in Goiania, a place in Brazil. Despite being closed, the clinic still contains a radiotherapy machine. The clinic is under legal dispute, and the authorities are not given proper information about the dangerous machines. Amid this, two people break into the building and find a machine, that they think is waste and harmless. They sell it to a local scrap yard owner, ‘Evenildo’ (played by Bukassa Kabengele).

Later, the owner finds a glowing blue powder inside it. However, rather than thinking about it, he gets fascinated by the powder and starts showing it to his family, friends and others. This is how the danger actually begins. Slowly and gradually, the powder is spread among hundreds of people. Some of them even apply it on their face. The docudrama also shows children playing with it as it glows in the dark. However, no one realises that it is very dangerous.

Even though people don’t realise the danger behind it, the powder starts doing its job as everyone with it starts getting sick. Some people start getting symptoms like vomiting, skin burns, weakness and hairloss. Initially even the doctors misjudged it as food poisoning because radiation sickness is not common.

The discovery of radioactive powder
When the situation worsens, a person senses a bigger threat and takes some amount of powder to the hospital. This becomes the turning point of the docudrama as the specialists identify the powder as Cesium-137. Soon after the identification, the specialists realise that a large part of the city might already be contaminated. This leads to the government and National Nuclear Energy Commission stepping in. This creates a panic in the city and the hospitals are overcrowded.

Despite the immense confusion, ‘Marcio’ comes forward and helps the authorities in leading the effort to track the contaminations and organise things. Soon after the panic, the authorities begin a mission to scan people for radiation exposure. The people who are contaminated are isolated and sent to Navy Hospital. The docudrama also shows the larger impact of the powder as multiple houses are demolished, personal valuables are destroyed and the streets are washed. This is the most emotional scene of the Netflix series as people are seeing their personal things and homes getting destroyed.

Multiple people die because of radiation
As the docudrama moves ahead, multiple people including a few children die due to the complications. Others who survive have to suffer with long term health effects. Along with this, the series also shows the emotional impact of the families who lost their loved ones. It highlights the trauma the survivors are going through and more. Apart from this, the government continues their job and decides to store the radioactive waste in a land called Abadia de Goias. However, the residents protest as they fear that this might do some permanent damage. To solve the issue, the authorities built a secure storage facility in the same land.
Radioactive Emergency ending
Towards the end of the docudrama, the authorities try to know more about the people who were responsible behind this. Eventually, through the investigation, they get to know about the machine and the authorities who failed to give proper information about it. Later, the officials, including some from CNEN, are questioned. Later, survivors are discharged from the hospital and they start to rebuild their life again.

Later, ‘Marcio’ is offered a job at CNEN for his hard work and efforts. It is worth mentioning that the final few minutes of the docudrama reveals actual footage from the tragic incident. According to the same, it can be said that the five people from the former medical facility were convicted of manslaughter and CNEN was asked to pay 1 million Reais for the care of victims.
