The highly anticipated derby of the Premier VRL League’s 9th round lacked excitement. Radnicki completely outplayed Jadran in Herceg Novi, winning 21:13, primarily because of the stunning middle two quarters.
Sabac defeated Crvena Zvezda 13:10. On Saturday, Novi Beograd will host Partizan, and Primorac will play against Buducnost.
Premier VRL League, Round 9
(Quarters 4:4, 4:7, 1:6, 4:4)
The first half of the clash between the national champions in Herceg Novi didn’t suggest that eight goals would separate the rivals after the final buzzer. Radnicki scored the first goal. Then Jadran took the lead twice (2:1 and 3:2) . The visitors made a new turn – 4:3. Five seconds before the first break, Merkulov leveled at 4:4. The teams were in a neck-and-neck race for most of the second quarter, with Radnicki taking a 1-goal lead, and Jadran leveling. In the 13th minute, Jadran scored the last (7:7).

After the hosts’ 7th goal, Radnicki started dominating. The Serbian champion built an 11:8 lead by halftime. Stupar kept Jadran’s hopes alive by converting a man-up and reducing the gap to two (9:11) in the 18th minute. But Radnicki responded with a 6:0 run and headed into the final quarter with a huge 17:9 lead. Two minutes before the end, the Kragujevac-based team reached a double-digit margin (21:11), before Jadran scored the last goal in the match.
One of the best players in the history of Jadran’s water polo school, and Radnicki’s captain today, Andrija Prlainovic, was the best scorer, contributing five goals to the visitors’ win. Strahinja Rasovic, Murisic and Vlachopoulos added three each. Janovic scored four for Jadran.
(Quarters 2:2, 4:2, 4:3, 3:3)
As expected, Sabac, which played without Ognjen Stojanovic, defeated Crvena Zvezda and kept 2nd place in the standings. However, the Belgrade-based team kept up with the favorites for almost three quarters.
Crvena Zvezda went ahead once – 2:1 (4th minute). After that, Sabac tightened its defense, keeping Crvena Zvezda goalless for almost ten minutes, while going on a 4:0 run to build a 5:2 lead. But the visitors started climbing back. In the 18th minute, Marko Radovic equalized at 6:6 from a penalty shot. Three minutes later, Stanojevic put Sabac in front – 7:6, but Radovic responded with another equalizer. Still, the visitors ran out of gas for the rest of the match. Sabc scored five goals in a row and built a safe 12:7 advantage with three minutes left on the clock.
