Inside Rahul Arunoday Banerjee’s last heartfelt letter to his 12-year-old, Sohoj
Years ago, in 2021, on the occasion of Father’s Day, Bengali actor, Rahul Arunoday Banerjee wrote a heartfelt letter to his son, Sohoj, who is now 12 years old. In the first part of the letter, Rahul mentioned his and his estranged wife, Priyanka Sarkar’s struggles in the Bengali entertainment industry. Addressing his son, Sohoj, Rahul wrote, “If you ever work in our industry, then you will know that you are privileged.” For the unversed, Priyanka and Rahul welcomed their first child, a son named Sohoj, on December 9, 2013. First part of Rahul’s letter to Sohoj can be read as:
“Your mother and I have been friends since your mother was 14 and I was 21. Since we were younger, we were shot last, leaving the others behind. And we two used to sit in the corner of the set and chat. Your mother was the daughter of an accounts teacher in Behala and I was the son of a very ordinary government employee. Neither of us knew anything about this industry. If you ever work in our industry, then you will know that you are privileged, a privilege that a 14-year-old girl and a 21-year-old boy have earned by being humiliated day after day—incidentally, by your parents.”

In mid part of his emotional letter, Rahul mentioned Priyanka’s sacrifices as a mom. He also recounted the moment when they welcomed their only son, Sohoj, into their lives. Addressing Sohoj, Rahul stated that Priyanka never bought baby food for him and made his food all by herself. He told Sohoj to take care of his mom. Rahul had written:
“The day we first got the news that you were coming into our lives, we went crazy with joy, you know? You may not know, your mother never bought you baby food from the market. She made everything with her own hands. Your mom struggled a lot for you, sacrificed a lot. We, the children, only feel the lump in her mother’s chest; we don’t see how many knives are stuck in her back. Mothers hide it carefully. Your mother has kept it too. But I want you to take care of those wounds.”

The last part of the letter was too personal. It contained a bad phase of Rahul’s life, which included his estranged wife, Priyanka and their little son, Sohoj. For the uninitiated, Rahul and Priyanka tied the knot in 2010. However, after nearly 7 years of marriage, in 2017, the couple filed for divorce. In a 2018 interview with Anandabazar Patrika, Priyanka mentioned that she sank into depression, and this mental health problem was making a bad impact on her son, Sohoj.

Thus, Priyanka called it quits with Rahul. Later, they reconciled in 2023. However, during the years in which Rahul and Priyanka were separated, Sohoj left the home with his mom. In the letter, Rahul shared that years ago, his son Sohoj asked him why he and Priyanka didn’t live together. But he had no answer to it.
