Rajinikanth fell head over heels in love with Amala

Rajinikanth worked with Amala in movies like Mappillai, Kodi Parakkuthu, and Velaikkaran. Their on-screen chemistry was loved by their huge fanbase. Rajinikanth was already an established star, while Amala was an upcoming actress. It was during the shooting of the film, Velaikkaran in 1987 that Rajinikanth fell in love with Amala. He would drop by the sets where Amala was shooting and stay for long hours.

Rajinikanth contemplated divorce from Latha Rangachari

The affair between Rajinikanth and Amala became so serious that the actor contemplated divorcing his wife, Latha Rangachari. As per multiple reports, he even sent a notice to Latha. The rumour of their divorce enraged the actor’s fans, who allegedly started boycotting his films.

Director K Balachandran’s intervention changed Rajinikanth’s decision

As the issue turned serious, a worried Latha reached out to filmmaker, K. Balachander, who was also Rajinikanth’s mentor. He took charge of the situation and counselled Rajinikanth about the repercussions of his decision. Balachander told Rajinikanth that his decision to divorce Latha would not just break his family, but would also malign his reputation as an actor. After Balachander’s intervention, Rajinikanth changed his decision, and soon the rumours also died down.

Rajinikanth’s marriage to Latha Rangachari

Rajnikanth had a chance encounter with a college student, Latha Rangachari, and he fell head over heels in love with her. It so happened that Latha, a student of English literature at Ethiraj College in Chennai, was assigned to interview Rajinikanth for the college magazine. When Rajinikanth came face-to-face with Latha for the interview, he decided to marry her.

During the interview, Rajinikanth proposed to Latha without giving her a moment to decide. Although the prospect of marrying a well-established actor excited her, she stayed calm and told him she needed to discuss it with her family.

It was Rajinikanth’s humble nature that attracted Latha to him. Despite being such a renowned name in the film industry, Rajinikanth was very grounded. He met her parents, and with the consent of both families, the couple married on February 26, 1981, in a traditional South Indian-style wedding at the famous Lord Balaji temple in Tirupati. Soon, they became parents to two lovely girls, Aishwaryaa and Soundarya.
