Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has shed light on what may come next in his celebrated filmography, revealing that he is currently developing ideas for sequels to two of his most beloved titles: Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots. The director, who has largely stayed out of the spotlight since delivering Dunki in 2023, shared the update in an interaction with Variety India, sparking excitement among fans awaiting his next move.
Hirani confirmed that both projects are at different stages of conceptualisation. “I have a couple of ideas at the moment. I’m actually working on both the films. I’ve been working on a ‘Munna Bhai’ script and also on a ‘3 Idiots’ sequel idea,” he said, indicating that neither film has yet been finalised for production.
Discussing the potential return of the beloved Sanjay Dutt–Arshad Warsi duo, Hirani admitted that the biggest challenge lies in resolving the story’s conclusion. “For ‘Munna Bhai’ I had an idea, which is done to a larger level, but still, I haven’t found the right end for it,” he explained, suggesting that the narrative arc is still evolving.
The idea for revisiting 3 Idiots, meanwhile, emerged unexpectedly. Hirani noted that the concept surfaced only recently and is still in its early stages. “It was just very recently that suddenly, out of nowhere, this one idea sparked up… and I have no idea how it’s gone out in the universe,” he said, adding that development is ongoing despite premature reports.
Beyond these two possibilities, Hirani revealed he has multiple scripts in progress and will soon determine which direction to pursue. “I have three or four scripts with me at the moment, and I’ll have to pretty quickly take a call on which way to walk now,” he stated.
Known for blending humour with emotional storytelling, Hirani’s films have consistently resonated with audiences and critics alike.
