Barcelona were riding their luck in the early stages of this afternoon’s Clasico clash with Real Madrid with the home side having a goal and a penalty overturned by the VAR.
Firstly, Lamine Yamal was let off after referee César Soto Grado pointed to the spot after just two minutes after adjudging the Spain winger had brought down Vinicius Jr inside the area.
VAR Iglesias Villanueva intervened with Soto Grado sent to the monitor to look at the challenge again. The official opted against his initial call, deciding that Vinicius Jr had actually fouled Yamal.
Barca were wobbling and Madrid were swarming forward at every opportunity.
And they thought they had the breakthrough after 12 minutes.
Fermin Lopez gave up possession after a poor ball from Frenkie de Jong and Kylian Mbappe latched on to the ball and fired a shot past Wojciech Szczesny. Again the Santiago Bernabéu erupted but, again, VAR intervened, and the goal was ruled out for an offside against the France captain.
Madrid started the day two points had of their Catalan rivals at the top of La Liga.
