Rebecca Gayheart Recalls Final Moments With Eric Dane Shortly Before His Demise, ‘I Cried And…’

Grey’s Anatomy actor, Eric Dane passed away at the age of 53. It was on February 20, 2026, when Eric Dane’s family, through a statement, confirmed the actor’s passing, which happened a few months after he went public with his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. For the unversed, Eric Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, and his passing sparked a sense of grief around. The actor is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters. Well, recently, in an interview revealed her final moments with the actor, and it’s all things emotional.

Rebecca Gayheart sat for an interview with Variety, wherein she revealed that shortly before his death, the actor, Eric Dane, collaborated with artificial intelligence firm ElevenLabs in a project that would restore his communication abilities so that he could connect with his loved ones. Rebecca shared that Eric was losing his voice, and it was becoming more and more difficult for him to communicate with his loved ones, so the project with the AI firm was short of urgent to him.

Eric was extremely excited about this project and was anxiously waiting for the same. When the couple had their hands on the project, it was a big moment, and she was left in tears. Recalling the same, Rebecca said:

“He was really excited about it, because he was losing his voice, and it was becoming more difficult for him to communicate each and every day. So it became sort of urgent. He was waiting anxiously to hear it, and when we got it from ElevenLabs it was a really big moment. It was a powerful moment. We played it, and Eric became visibly emotional. And when I heard it, I cried. I think everyone in the room did.”

Rebecca Gayheart shared that her husband wanted to advocate for love and the movement around ALS, and now she will be doing the same. Sharing why this project was so big for Eric, Rebecca added that since he was losing his ability to communicate, this type of project that helps individuals to communicate with their loved ones, is generally something huge.

Rebecca added that her entire family is in a state of shock after the loss they faced. She also extended her gratitude to the entertainment community and the fans and well-wishers who held her and her daughters in this tough phase of life. She also mentioned that Hollywood just gets a bad rap, which makes her mad because she feels that it’s a lovely community. An excerpt from Rebecca’s statement could be read as:

“They’ve been holding me and the girls up the last two weeks, and I don’t think they’re going anywhere. I think they’re in it for the long haul. Hollywood gets a bad rap. That kind of makes me mad, because we have a lovely community of people, and I’m so grateful for them.”

Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane met each other while filming Grey’s Anatomy. According to PEOPLE, while being on the set one day, Eric asked Rebecca out, to which she said ‘Yes’, and 10 months later, they ended up marrying each other. The couple got married in 2004, and they have two daughters. In 2018, Rebecca filed for divorce, which she dismissed in 2025.

Speaking about Rebecca on Netflix’s Famous Last Words, Eric said that he never loved anyone more than his wife, Rebecca. He also mentioned that when he first met Rebecca, he turned to one of her friends, saying he would marry her one day. Rebecca was engaged to her childhood sweetheart back then, and thus, her friend was adamant that nothing would work out between the actress and Eric. However, years later, the couple exchanged vows and became each other’s forever.
