The former This Morning host banked a massive amount of money for charity on Celebrity Catchphrase with only a second left to answer tough question

Former This Morning star Richard Madeley wowed viewers when he managed to bank an eye-watering £10k on Celebrity Catchphrase in the very last second.

Richard joined host Stephen Mulhern and the other contestants, comedian Axel Black and radio star Sian Welby, to raise money for charity in a celeb special of Catchphrase.

Having beaten both Axel and Sian, Richard faced the final 60 second round, where he had just a minute to answer questions about famous sayings.

Working his way up the Catchphrase ladder, Richard was able to bank £2.5k and £5k with the first two rows. He then took on the third row, which contains box number 11.

If answered correctly, not only would Richard’s total from the round rise to £10k but the money collected by Axel and Sian in earlier rounds would double. But, he only had five seconds left.

Opting for number 11, Richard was shown a clip with the words ‘FEW’ written twice, both drawn with arms and legs. A similarly anthropomorphic ‘FAR’ then came to stand between them.

With only a second left on the clock, Richard said: “Few and far between”. Stephen, unable to contain his excitement, immediately shouted that Richard had won £10k. As he had previously banked £7.4k, his took his total up to £17.4k.

As per the rules of box 11, both Axel and Sian also saw their jackpots double. Axel took away £800, while Sian nabbed £6,000. The total money raised for charity was £24.2k.

The television presenter first made a name for himself on BBC Radio Carlisle aged 19. He moved to Granada Reports in the 1980s and met his wife Judy Finnigan there. With Judy, Richard hosted This Morning from 1988-2001.

The pair then left ITV’s morning show to do their own chat show on Channel 4, called Richard & Judy. The show ended in 2009. Richard has since been a relief presenter for Good Morning Britain.

He has been covering one of the presenter spots on the show in the past week and on Thursday (16 October) halted a discussion on speeding offences to confess that he had six points on his license after committing two offences.

Richard shared: “One for doing 34 mph on a dual carriageway at four thirty in the morning when it was a 30 mph [zone], I didn’t realise that. And one for doing 24 mph in a 20 mph zone at four thirty in the morning. And I have to say, I don’t mind being fined because, yes, I have broken the limit inadvertently, but to get three points on a licence, as well, seemed a bit harsh.”
