Richard Osman left his wife Ingrid Oliver stunned during their early dating days when he confessed he had never seen iconic films like Sound of Music and Top Gun

Ingrid Oliver, wife of TV personality Richard Osman, was left gobsmacked when he confessed to a surprising gap in his film knowledge. Richard, 55, has been a fixture in the television industry since the 90s, when he started writing scripts for shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Have I Got News for You.

More recently, he’s graced our screens on programmes such as Pointless and Richard Osman’s House of Games. It was on the set of the latter that he crossed paths with actress and comedian Ingrid, known for her roles in shows like Doctor Who.

During their early days, Richard dropped a bombshell that left Ingrid flabbergasted – he hadn’t seen some of Hollywood’s most iconic films, admitting they were “blind spots” in his viewing history.

While speaking on The Rest Is Entertainment, Richard revealed: “I had a lot more blind spots before I married Ingrid, because Ingrid would start talking to me about the Sound of Music and I’d go, ‘Oh, I’ve never seen the Sound of Music’.

“And she’d be like, ‘I’m sorry’, And I’d be like, ‘I’ve never seen the Sound of Music’. ‘You’ve never seen the Sound of Music?’ ‘No, when would I have seen it?’ would be my point.”

Richard then shared how Ingrid suggested he could have watched it “when he was younger”. He cheekily retorted by asking if she had seen the “1979 FA Cup final when Alan Sunderland scored in the last minute”.

He concluded: “That’s the kind of stuff I was watching. Spoiler alert, I have now seen the Sound of Music.”

Richard’s confession followed a podcast listener revealing they’d avoided Titanic because they “know how it ends”. The former Pointless presenter continued: “The Sound of Music, like all these things, I thought, ‘I know this film, I’ve seen every single clip of it’.

“Then you watch it and you go, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing, this is why people like the Sound of Music’. There’s a reason that some of these iconic films are iconic, because they’ve got all those clips you’ve seen, but in between it you’re like, ‘Oh I didn’t know this was going to happen in this film’.

“So I hadn’t seen Sound of Music, now I have. I hadn’t seen Top Gun, which I think was even worse, she put that right almost immediately, I think that was like third date we had to go see Top Gun.”

Richard’s co-host Marina Hyde remarked that it’s a “great third date” suggestion. Richard responded: “Yeah, at a drive-in.”

Additional films on his unwatched list included West Side Story and Mary Poppins. Yet there’s one major film studio Richard insists he’ll steer clear of.

He explained: “Almost every Disney movie I have not seen and will never see, it just doesn’t speak to me. When my kids were growing up, the Pixar stuff was coming out, so you’ve got Monsters Inc, you had Toy Story, the golden age of that, so those were the things I would watch with my kids and I never watched Disney when I was growing up. I will never watch Disney at all.”

Richard revealed that regarding television, he had “never watched the Sopranos ” because he wanted to view it with someone special. He explained: “I had never watched the Sopranos for a different reason, I knew I would be incredibly excited to watch the Sopranos at some point, but I knew I wanted to watch it with somebody.

“In my head, a tiny bit of me was wondering if that person would show up. Very early on, on a date with Ingrid, we were talking about TV and I was talking about the Sopranos and she said, ‘I’ve never seen Sopranos and the reason I’ve never seen it is because I keep waiting for that person to turn up’.”

He disclosed they subsequently decided not to watch it until tying the knot. The couple are now working their way through the series, he confirmed.
