English comedian, writer and actor Ricky Gervais has donated nearly £2.5 million (about €2.8 million) to 22 animal charities around the world.
The money comes from “platinum ticket” sales for his recent Mortality tour and was shared between many groups that help pets and wildlife.
“To celebrate my Mortality Tour, my Netflix Special, my Golden Globes nomination and The Spirit of Christmas, I am donating £2.43 Million to animals,” the 64‑year‑old star, known for creating The Office, Derek and After Life, said on Tuesday.
How the money is shared
The gifts will support 22 different animal charities. Four groups received gifts of £150,000 each (roughly €170,000), and 17 charities received £100,000 each (about €113,000).
A final £132,000 (about €150,000) went to the British‑Afghan organisation Nowzad, which helps animals in Afghanistan and Ukraine.
He donated to the follwoing charities: PDSA, International Animal Rescue, Celia Hammond Animal Trust, Animals Asia, Nowzad and Libearty Sanctuary. Pangea, Wild Futures, All Dogs Matter, Dogs On The Streets, Paws2Rescue, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and Saving Strays. Chaldon Animal Sanctuary, Turgwe Hippo Trust, Safe Haven For Donkeys, Catastrophes Cat Rescue and Finding Shelter Animal Rescue. Flori’s Friends Animal Rescue, NYC Second Chance Rescue, Helping Rhinos and Retreat Animal Rescue.
Animal charities around the world often face increasing costs for food, veterinary care and shelter space.
Large gifts like this can fund vital work such as medical treatment and surgery, rescuing abused or neglected animals, supporting wildlife protection projects and feeding and caring for animals in conflict zones.
This is not the first major contribution of Gervais. He gave nearly £1.9 million to charity from a previous tour and has supported animal welfare for many years.
