The Godfather star Robert Duvall has died as tributes flood in for the acting legend. The actor became a household name for his notable role in the hit movie and its sequels, where he played Tom Hagen.
Robert died at his home in Middleburg, Virginia with his wife by his side. He was known for his roles in The Godfather, as well as other Hollywood hits including Apocalypse Now and Wild Horses.
The actor’s wife, Luciana, issued a statement, confirming his passing: “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.
“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented.
“In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”
Robert was an Academy Award winning actor and was born in San Diego. He was one of three children, and grew up in Annapolis alongside his two brothers – William Jr and Jack.
He served in the US Army before moving to New York to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse School under acting teacher Sanford Meisner. He became a household name with his portrayal of Tom in The Godfather and its sequels.
Robert won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies in 1984 and was nominated for a number of Oscars over his six decade career.
No formal service will be held following his passing, as he wished. Instead, his family have asked people to honour his memory by watching a great film or sharing a story around the table with friends.
