When Rory McIlroy won his second green jacket on Sunday, the Masters’ official X account tweeted a video of the winning moment with the clever caption, “Holywood has its sequel.”
Back in Holywood, they were celebrating too.
McIlroy learned the game at Holywood Golf Club in Northern Ireland, and the CBS broadcast cut to the club a handful of times during the final-round broadcast. Five hours ahead of Augusta, Ga., the clubhouse was packed as they watched the action unfold.
They cheered when McIlroy made birdies and turned quiet and put their hands on their heads when he three-putted the par-3 4th hole to make double bogey, or when he sprayed his 18th-hole tee shot.
During the Butler Cabin interview following his victory, Jim Nantz told McIlroy that throughout the day’s coverage they showed live shots of Holywood Golf Club, which was living and dying with every shot.
“Wait until you see the celebration that was going on there around midnight tonight,” Nantz told him. “Any message you’d like to send back home to everyone?”
McIlroy thought for a moment.
“Just thank you for all the support,” he said, as he started to fight back tears. “I was a little kid with a dream, and the support that I have from my family, my friends, everyone back home, some people probably thought it was outlandish to dream the things that I wanted to do, but I had amazing support from back home, and can’t thank them all enough for that continued support.”
That’s a loyal bunch at Holywood, too. Here’s how they reacted to the win in 2025:
Will they have more to celebrate this time next year? We’ll have to wait another 12 months to find out.
