Ryan Thomas and Lucy Mecklenburgh got engaged seven years ago but are yet to tie the knot

Lucy Mecklenburgh is said to be delaying her wedding to Ryan Thomas after getting engaged over seven years ago. The pair fell in love in 2017 after meeting on Channel 4’s Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls.

Ryan popped the question to the former TOWIE star in Positano, Italy, but they are yet to walk down the aisle. They have previously claimed they. hadn’t got round to sealing the deal due to life getting in the way.

But sources claim there could be more to it, with Lucy keeping a close eye on her man’s financial status. The duo have welcomed two children to the world since getting engaged – Roman, six, and Lilah, three. Ryan also shares daughter Scarlett with his ex, Tina O’Brien. But plans for Ryan and Lucy’s big day could be a while away yet.

A source told the The Sun: “Lucy comes from money – her dad Paul is very wealthy and has an extensive property portfolio, so she and her two sisters will inherit a lot from him one day. Lucy listens to everything her father says, and she has always been very financially literate.

“She was raised to understand money and be very careful with it, and as soon as she started making money from TOWIE, her dad taught her to make careful investments. Ryan, on the other hand, has admitted to making a lot of mistakes with money and not being financially savvy in the past.”

The source said that while the couple currently share some money and own properties together, they “wouldn’t be surprised if Lucy has been advised to protect her interests”.

They continued to say Lucy is really proud of her man for clawing himself back from previous financial difficulties. The former Coronation Street star ended January 2025 with just £1 left in his business account. It came after his prime-time ITV show 99 To Beat was axed. The findings were shown in his business account, R James Thomas Ltd., which is used to hold the funds he earns from various TV and social media work.

According to financial statements filed in October last year with Companies House for the year ending on 26 January 2025, the “cash at bank and in hand” was £1. A year earlier, he had ended with £41,361 in the bank.

And he is also said to have been bankrupt in the past. In 2024, aged 40, Ryan reflected on his money management skills when he was just 16. Speaking to The Times, he said: “I had money from a very young age – and for a 16-year-old I had a hell of a lot of money. So, I did have a credit card growing up and it caused me a few problems.”

He admitted that while he couldn’t recall how much he neglected his finances, he remembered he was always late with repayments, leading to a debt he wasn’t aware of. Ryan revealed at the time that he filed for bankruptcy in 2013 due to an unpaid tax bill, which he attributes to sheer negligence.

But he said he doesn’t regret his past mistakes. He went on: “But I don’t regret any of the things that happened to me because I actually feel like they’ve been a real blessing. I’ve learnt so much and I don’t think to myself, “Oh, I did this, I did that,” because I’m the sort of guy who takes a day at a time anyway.”

As well as his role on the Corrie cobbles, Ryan has appeared on – and won – Celebrity Big Brother in 2018. He also appeared on Celebrity MasterChef and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip in 2022 and won Dancing on Ice in 2024.
