Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks opened up about the moment the Staying Relevant podcast host thought his best friend had died after he disappeared for 24 hours in Las Vegas
Sam Thompson “thought Pete Wicks had died” after the former Strictly Come Dancing star “went off the radar”. Sam, 33, struck up a friendship with Pete, 37, during their stint on Celebs Go Dating.
Their bond has since deepened, with Pete even greeting Sam on the I’m A Celeb bridge when he was crowned King of the Jungle in 2023. The duo also co-host the Staying Relevant podcast.
As part of their podcast duties, they jetted off to Las Vegas in 2025. However, following the trip, Pete decided he “needed a day off”, which led to worry from Sam and their team due to his sudden silence.
Discussing the trip on Alan Carr’s Life’s a Beach podcast, Pete revealed: “I adore Vegas, I’ve been quite a few times. It’s the first time we’ve been together and I wouldn’t do that again.”
He continued: “It got to the point where we were there five days, and three days we had work to do, we had loads of fun and stuff, but I had to have a day off so I went off radar for 24 hours but I didn’t tell anyone, didn’t answer the phone, nothing. They thought I’d died.
“Because no one had seen me they had to send a search party. Even carers have days off, and that’s basically what it’s like.”
Pete humorously noted that after “15 minutes” Alan appeared “f****d off” with former Made in Chelsea star Sam. He quipped: “It’s a running joke that I won’t make it past 40.”
Sam quipped that their podcast team had “thought about the Netflix documentary” after Pete disappeared. The former TOWIE favourite Pete revealed: “Sam keeps saying that if I die he’s going to release a documentary, which will be ‘The Monster Inside: Pete Wicks.'”
Sam continued: “When it got near the end of the day and we were all like, ‘Oh, Pete might have passed away,’ and we were like, ‘Do you know what? There’s no better way for Pete to pass than in Vegas’.”
Recently, Sam has been singing Pete’s praises for being a “constant” through the “highs and lows” of a tumultuous year which saw Sam part ways with his ex Zara McDermott, complete a gruelling 260-mile run and cycle for Soccer Aid whilst helping to raise £2million, and headline the O2 arena with Staying Relevant.
Chatting to The Mirror, he shared: “We’ve both been through massive highs, massive lows and career changes. And personal life changes and stuff. Who you are as a person changes as you grow up.
“And the one constant that stays there every single time is the fact that we’re best mates. And that we will always be there for each other.”
Despite neither Sam nor Pete finding romance on Celebs Go Dating back in 2018, he credited Pete with having a profound influence on his life. He continued: “I don’t know if many friendships get the luxury of meeting someone who you know will be there at any stage of your life.
“And if I called Pete and said, ‘I’m in a really really bad way mentally’, he’d be at my front door within seconds.”
