Savannah Chrisley, an actress and influencer who was at the centre of USA Network show Chrisley Knows Best, spoke to defend Donald Trump during her appearance on The View

Actress and influencer Savannah Chrisley faced a backlash after appearing to defend Donald Trump’s “racist” actions.

The US President, 79, was accused of using the death of Jesse Jackson to insist he is not racist, an alleged ploy that has led to criticism across US media. It was discussed this week on The View, a long-running talk show on ABC, during which guest Savannah, 28, defended the politician.

The actress, whose wealthy parents were pardoned by Mr Trump after being sentenced for bank fraud and tax evasion, said: “It is so hard for me to witness people stating that the president is a racist because I have seen him first-hand. He saved one of my best friend’s lives, a black woman. He saved her life.”

But Whoopi Goldberg, filling in as guest presenter, challenged Savannah, listing several reasons why Mr Trump has been described as racist over the decades. She said the star was accused, in the 1970s, of prejudice against Black tenants because he did not want to rent properties to them.

Whoopi, 70, said: “When someone goes out of their way to talk poorly about immigrants – innocent immigrants – there seems to be no ability in his mind to distinguish between Black people and his idea of what DEI (Diversity, equity, and inclusion) is. When you really look up and see who this was for, who benefited from DEI, it was not Black folks… He has not a great history.”

Earlier this month, a racist AI-generated clip depicting the Obamas as apes was shared on Mr Trump‘s Truth Social account. Speaking on The View, Savannah, who was born in Atlanta, Georgia, did acknowledge this was unacceptable but stressed Mr Trump is not racist.

And social media users shared their fury at Savannah’s comments. One post reads: “She is as bigoted as they come.” Another post reads: “People who defend Trump’s behavior are lacking common sense. They think that because he throws out names of famous black people who tolerate him, and when he brags about what he does for the black communities, it’s all in good faith.”

The sickening clip had briefly depicted former president Mr Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. The AI-generated figures are seen dancing in a jungle to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. The clip is overlaid with a watermark reading @XERIAS_X, an X account with 45,400 followers that supports Trump.

The full one-minute video claims to expose proof of a coordinated effort to rig the 2020 election, specifically alleging wrongdoing involving the voting machine company Dominion Voting Systems.
