Savannah Guthrie offers $1m reward for information on missing mum

On Day 24 since Nancy Guthrie‘s disappearance, her TV star daughter Savannah has offered a $1 million reward for any information that helps the family get her 84-year-old mother back. Nancy has been missing since the start of February and the FBI have suggested it could be a kidnapping.

“We still believe in a miracle, we still believe that she can come home – hope against hope,” said the presenter in a teary Instagram video. “We also know that she may be lost, she may already be gone, she may have already gone home to the Lord that she loves.”

In the video, posted on 24 February, news anchor Savannah added that she and her family would donate $500,000 to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, in the hopes that the “attention that has been given to out mom and our family will extend to all families”.

Nancy was reported missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona and has not been seen since 1 February. After doorbell camera footage from the night she disappeared showed a masked person trying to interfere with the camera, the police said they thought it could be a kidnapping.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told the Daily Mail that he felt Nancy had been kidnapped. He said: “This is somebody who’s disappeared from the face of the earth, and now we have a camera that says here’s the person who did this. And that’s what makes me say this is a kidnapping.”

However, he added that he was not sure what the motive would be: “The motivation for it is where we get stuck, right? Is it for money? I mean, we had the one demand where they asked for money. But is it really for money, or is it for revenge for something?”

A glover that matched those worn by the masked figure was found at the scene. Though many other gloves were found in the area too, an FBI spokesperson told Fox News that the glove matched DNA they found at the home that did not seem to match anyone close to Nancy. They said: “The one with the DNA profile recovered is different and appears to match the gloves of the subject in the surveillance video.”

Police also found blood matching Nancy’s outside her home and the house was formally declared a crime scene. The FBI have issued their own reward for information that either lead to Nancy’s return or an arrest, which stands at $100,000.

At least two ransom demands were sent to media outlets but the authorities have not confirmed any direct contact between the alleged kidnappers and the family. As such, many of the notes sent to the media have been deemed hoaxes or extortion attempts.

President Donald Trump has also issued a warning to the alleged kidnappers, telling them that they may be given the death penalty should Nancy die. Trump threatened the kidnappers with “very, very severe – the most severe” federal consequences and when asked if the Department of Justice would issue the death penalty, he said: “Yeah, that’s true.”

The death penalty is legal federally and in 27 states in the USA, including Arizona. Earlier this month, the president took to his social media site Truth Social to share that he spoke with Savannah about her missing mother. He wrote: “I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY.

“We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely. The prayers of our Nation are with her and her family. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT NANCY!”
