It appeared Scott Mills had it all after a big few years following his marriage to Sam Vaughn, who said their relationship was like something out of Gavin and Stacey

It seemed like Scott Mills had the perfect life after taking over Radio 2’s flagship breakfast show months after becoming a married man.

However, today the 53-year-old’s ‘lifelong dream’ of taking one of Radio’s biggest jobs is over following an allegation relating to his personal conduct. He was hauled off air on his show last Tuesday, but his contract was terminated at the weekend, the Mirror revealed today.

Mills was beloved by fans and one of the BBC’s highest paid stars, the corporation’s annual report released in July 2025 showed Scott earned between £355,000 and £359,999 per year. He received a further pay increase after taking over from Zoe and he appeared to have everything he wanted after getting hitched two years ago.

Scott married husband Sam Vaughn months before his huge career boost and he said at the time: “I’m at the exact point in my life where I should be doing a breakfast show,” he told Radio Times. He then told the Mirror: “I had such a mad year last year, it was the best year of my life. “I’m honestly the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

The beginning of their romance dated back to 2016 when their paths crossed at a radio event in Wales, before the pair embarked on a romantic relationship a year later.

Sam, from Bridgend, described their early relationship as being a bit like the fictional characters Gavin and Stacey, as they went back and forth between London and Wales to see each other.

Scott and Sam announced their engagement in October 2021 after being together for four years. In a gushing Instagram post, Scott said: “After 4 years together I’m delighted to say we got engaged at the weekend. As Sam knows, I always said I didn’t think I would ever get married. But then I met you Sam.

“You make me laugh every single day, you support me in so many ways and I adore everything about you. As soon as I met you I knew this could be something special and it is (after a slow start).”

“We’ve had some amazing times, and I’m bursting with happiness to know we will have so many more. I love you with all my heart.”

When Covid hit and lockdowns threatened to separate them they took the decision to move in together. Scott confessed to The Times that it was love from the starting line for him, but Sam, on the other hand, required a bit more convincing. His words captured their connection: “The more time we spent together, the more I could see we were right for each other. I just needed him to see that too.”

But Scott admits there was a blow before their love truly blossomed. “When we had the conversation about taking it forward and he said ‘I’m not ready’, I was devastated,” he said. “Being friends with someone you’re in love with doesn’t work. We didn’t speak for six months.”

But few doubted it was true love after the couple welcomed a furry friend into the family, a Cavapoo called Teddy, before moving rom Scott’s North London semi-detached town house into a bigger place in the suburbs.
