A seal pup who was found during an illegal rave in the Netherlands in June has been released into the Wadden Sea on Saturday. After months of care, the pup was strong enough to return to her natural habitat.
Rave, the newborn seal pup, was found in June among parked cars at an illegal party in Borgsweer. The police discovered her alone and weakened. Rave was immediately taken to the seal hospital WEC, where she received intensive care.
During her stay at the center, Rave developed an umbilical hernia, which required emergency surgery. After a successful procedure, she gradually recovered.
She did fall ill again, showing symptoms like sneezing and coughing, but gradually improved afterward.
By mid-August, she began eating on her own, and since mid-September, she has been actively swimming.
Over the months, veterinarians monitored her health, rehabilitation, and readiness to survive in the wild again.
“We are happy that she can return to her natural environment, but it also highlights that her rescue likely wouldn’t have been necessary without human interference,” the Seal Center Pieterburen said.
“Her story underscores the urgent need to treat wildlife and their habitats responsibly, so that situations like this can be prevented in the future.”
Seals, like Rave, are born in the Wadden Sea and along the Dutch coast. Mother seals depend heavily on quiet, undisturbed areas to give birth and nurse their pups.
When these areas are disrupted, by noise, pollution, or human presence, the consequences for seal pups can be life-threatening.
