Seton Hall saw one of its highest and lowest moments all in one go.
In the Pirates’ season-opening loss to Boston College at the Puerto Rico Challenge on Friday night, left fielder Justin Ford hit a two-run homer out to left-center field during the fifth inning but he didn’t make it past second base.
The junior utility player went down with what looked to be a gruesome ankle injury after rounding first base.
While looking back at the Pirates dugout in celebration, he jumped and landed on his left ankle the wrong way, twisting underneath him.
The Roxbury High School (N.J.) product immediately went down and grabbed his ankle in pain.
A stretcher was later brought out to take him off the field and Ford was replaced by a pinch-runner to score his run, which gave the Pirates a brief 4-3 lead.
“Ford injured himself while rounding the bases,” Seton Hall’s baseball X account later posted.
“Please join us in sending Justin best wishes and a speedy recovery.”
Seton Hall ultimately fell, 6-4, but also lost Ford, who showed flashes of promise with a .171 average in limited action last season, along with seven RBIs and his first career home run.
Prior to the home run, he recorded a strikeout and a walk.
Seton Hall faces Manhattan on Saturday at 4 p.m. and North Carolina State on Sunday at 5 p.m. to wrap up its Puerto Rico trip.
