Sherrone Moore sex scandal was Michigan’s ‘worst-kept secret’

Former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore’s alleged misconduct had been widely known among university employees during the last two seasons with him at the helm, multiple sources told CBS Sports.

Moore, 39, was fired with cause Wednesday for engaging in an “inappropriate’ relationship with a staff member — and was detained by Pittsfield police department later that day for an alleged assault.

“This was the worst-kept secret,” one source said, adding that rumors of Moore’s alleged misconduct with the staffer had been floating around for some time.

A high-level Michigan booster claimed Schembechler Hall — the football building — was “swarming with lawyers” earlier this month.

“Everybody in the program has known this the last two seasons,” the booster told CBS.

“This is a sad day to see it come to this. I feel horrible for all the players, coaches and families who are going to be disrupted. And I don’t know what becomes of Sherrone.”

Moore’s alleged misconduct didn’t surprise one agent, who explained they were more intrigued by the timing of his termination since it came after the early signing period and with most of the coaching carousel already settled.

“We’d heard about it a while ago,” one agent told the outlet. “Just didn’t think it was actually going to happen since we’re all the way through the cycle now.”

Multiple industry sources reportedly believe Moore was fired this week because Michigan has a plan in place.

“I wonder if this means they’re already down the road with somebody and have a plan,” one source said to CBS.

“I’m going to give [Michigan athletic director] Warde [Manuel] credit,” one Power Four athletics director said to CBS. “I’m going to be shocked if he doesn’t have a plan and they haven’t already done something.”

Here’s the latest on former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore

Moore signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $5.5 million last year.

The university will not have to buy out the remaining years of his contract because he was fired for cause, according to the terms of his deal.

Several potential candidates were linked to Michigan — including Kalen DeBoer, Brian Kelly, Jedd Fisch, Manny Diaz, Tony Elliott and Jesse Minter — after the University’s wild sequence this week.

Moore allegedly broke into an apartment belonging to his recently promoted executive assistant, Paige Shiver — the daughter of longtime Chicago Bears scout Jeff Shiver — according to records obtained by The Post.

Moore is set to make his first court appearance Friday for allegations of assault after being arrested Wednesday.

He has not yet been charged with a crime.

An attorney for Moore said “no comment” to “Good Morning America,” and the University of Michigan will continue its own investigation separately.

Moore is a father to three young girls, and his wife, Kelli Moore, welcomed a baby over the summer.

Francis “Biff” Poggi is serving as the program’s interim head coach for the 2025 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Texas on Dec. 31.
