Simon Cowell’s newly-formed boyband December 10 has already been signed by a major record label and recorded its first single – and it turns out one members has already had two major shots at TV musical stardom
Nicolas Alves is one of the new members of Simon Cowell’s newest boyband, December 10, but it turns out this is not first brush with television fame. The 16-year-old singer and his six bandmates were scouted on Simon’s Netflix series The Next Act, and have just unveiled the video for their debut song Bye, Bye, Bye – and it’s hopefully a case of third time lucky for young Nicolas.
It turns out that the teenager, who was born in England and moved to Portugal aged 10, has actually had a few turns in the spotlight as a child star already. In 2022 he made it to the finals of The Voice Kids in Portugal, which was used as a platform to find the country’s entrant for that year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

After finishing as The Voice runner-up to winner Maria Gil, he went on to represent the country at the Junior Eurovision show and performed an original song, Anos 70 (which translates as The Seventies). His total of 121 points landed him in eighth place out of the 16 entrants.
His biography on the Junior Eurovision website said of the youngster, “He has a cat called Ben and a dog named Rocky, and in his free time Nicolas likes to play guitar with his brothers, as well as trying out new recipes.
“Amongst his favourite artists are Queen and Elvis Presley – so he should get on well with France’s Lissandro, who has similar tastes!”
With major performing experience already under his belt, Nicolas impressed Simon and his advisors on the Netflix talent hunt, The Next Act. The music mogul, 66, and his fellow panel of Pete Waterman, Savan Kotecha, and Kamille, described the teenager as “utterly joyful” and compared him to a young George Michael during his audition in London.
The youngster, who has a slight look of Harry Styles about him, told the experts, “’When it comes to music I am very serious. It’s what I want to do, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. Of course you have to have fun with it, but to a certain degree it has to be taken seriously too.”
After a series of challenges and studio training sessions in Los Angeles, where Simon lives, Nicolas made it into the band, along with Hendrik Christoffersen, 19, Cruz Lee-Ojo, 19, John Fadare, 17, Seán Hayden, 19, Josh Olliver, 17, and Danny Bretherton, 16.
The group – named December 10 after the day the reality series landed on Netflix – have already been signed by EMI/Universal, the label behind the likes of Lewis Capaldi and Justin Bieber, and their first offering is a cover version of NSYNC’s chart-topping Bye Bye Bye.
But the name of the newly-formed septuplet has not gone down well with everyone, and a Glasgow-based metal band, December Tenth, has asked anyone in “Simon’s team, Universal or Netflix” to get in touch with themselves and their “legal team”.
Writing on social media, one member said, “Our social media accounts have blown up and we had no idea why. It turns out that Simon Cowell has released a new Netflix show, called ‘December 10’. We are now being inundated with well wishes from fans of the show thinking we are that band.”
