Simply Red legend Mick Hucknall has addressed the roomer that he had slept with 3,000 women and revealed that he ‘couldn’t believe his luck’ during his heyday
Mick Hucknall has addressed the claims he’s slept with 3,000 women. The Simply Red legend, 65, once stated that he had “three lovers a day” during their heyday in the 90s.
Throughout the course of his life, the Manchester-born legend has boasted a string of high-profile relationships, including the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones, former EastEnders icon Martine McCutcheon and original supermodel, Helena Christensen. In 2010, he said, “Between 1985 and 1987, I would sleep with about three women a day.”
But now, Mick has given a candid insight into his lothario days, as well as his life with Gabriella Wesberry, admitting he doesn’t understand how she has stood by his side. Now, in a new interview, he’s finally addressed the claims about his wild days – but refused to confirm or deny whether the claims are accurate.
“I was a kid in a sweet shop who couldn’t believe his luck,” the singer said. He went on to say: “My poor wife. How she’s stuck with me, I don’t know.” Hucknall and Wesberry married in 2010, having first met in the 1990s. However, addressing the MeToo movement and whether he was concerned about any of his former flames, he shook his head, before telling The Sunday Times Magazine: “It was always mutual.
“You want to be attractive and, in my psychology, imposing yourself on someone is the complete opposite of being desired. Somebody desiring you is what makes me tick. Imposing myself on somebody does not make me tick at all.”
However, Mick hasn’t spoken to his daughter, Romy, 18, about the speculation surrounding his previous sex life, having completely devoted himself to his family. “It’s so far in the past,” he said, before adding that while he’s not religious, he takes his marital vows extremely seriously and has no intentions of sleeping with anybody else.
He went on to say that his wife knows this, as does his daughter. Hucknall’s strong views on family were instilled in him by his dad, Reg, who raised him as a single father, after Mick’s mum, Maureen, abandoned him when he was just three years old.
Speaking previously to The Sun, Mick said in 2023: “I was just touring the world and being single, being a playboy, being a bachelor — I didn’t really know what I was doing,’ joking that he was “just having a good time.” He went on to say: “I think in your life it’s a good thing to have dimension, to have done lots of different things, to have lots of different experiences.”
Mick’s previous girlfriends include a brief romance with Zeta-Jones in 1998, a very short relationship with telly star Ulrika Jonsson, as well as Melanie Sykes, Prince Andrew’s ex-girlfriend, Lady Victoria Hervey and Steffi Graf.
Meanwhile, Mick’s new concert film has been hit with a “sexual” content warning – because of his lyrics involving the discussion of sex and booze. He had previously been open about his taste for alcohol, as well as trying “every drug.” Speaking about his sexual endeavours in 2006, Mick said: “No, I’m guilty. It’s life’s experience. I think it’s searching for approval. Love me, admire me – something like that.
“In most cases, though, it usually had to do with being drunk. You go into any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night and you see it going on all over the world. There’s nothing particularly unusual about it but because of being famous it gets reported, it gets blown up. Ultimately, it doesn’t make you happy.”
