Shohei Manabe’s The Great Sin of Article 9, also known as Kujo no Taizai, is a Japanese manga series. It was serialised in Shogakukan’s seinen manga magazine, Weekly Big Comic Spirit and has since become one of the most-loved series. Netflix is now bringing Shohei Manabe’s crime drama to the screen with a stellar cast and a story which will leave viewers questioning moral grounds, as the series is believed to push every boundary set by the law.
What is Sins of Kujo about?
Kujo no Taizai, or The Great Sin of Article 9, is the latest manga series by the well-known Japanese illustrator, Shohei Manabe. The series’ trailer has revealed the show’s official title: Sins of Kujo. He rose to fame with his popular dark-hero manga, Yamikin Ushijim-kun. His latest work, The Great Sin, has been part of Big Comic Spirits (Shogakukan) since October 2020 and has become a hot topic, with 15 volumes published to date and over 4 million copies sold. The story has now been adapted on screen.

Talking about the story, Sins of Kujo pushes the boundaries between law and morality to the extreme. It dabbles into the darkness lurking in everyday life that has been considered taboo until now, shaking up the true measure of modern society. The series is now all set to appear in live action and question the bounds of social norms.

What did the author say about Sins of Kujo?
Shohei Manabe also reflected on the adaptation of Sins of Kujo as a live-action drama. He was among the first to watch all 10 episodes in advance. He shared that he had already watched the show thrice and found himself eagerly anticipating what would happen next, even though he wrote the original story. He was quoted as saying:
“It’s incredibly interesting, and I’ve already watched it three times (laughs). Even though it was originally a story I came up with, while watching the drama, I found myself wondering, ‘What’s going to happen next?’ When real people act it out, they can convey emotions through their breathing and their gaze.”

Shohei Manabe further shared that the actor’s work truly brings the story to life. He revealed that the series is addictive and that he is extremely pleased with how it turned out. Despite being the creator of the story, he has already expressed his excitement as a fan of the drama. He was quoted as saying:

Inside the story and themes of Sins of Kujo
The unconventional lawyer ‘Kenji Kujo’ and the justice-seeking ‘Shinji Karasuma’ are polar opposites. While one focuses on getting his client to win, regardless of the truth, the latter stands strongly with the right. Set in an outlaw ecosystem in a tiny corner of modern society, the Netflix series, Sins of Kujo, depicts the world of lawyers who confront the weak. They target those who struggle to survive at the bottom and the strong who prey on them, exposing the inconvenient and uncomfortable realities of modern society. The realistic entertainment series, Sins of Kujo will be streamed worldwide on Netflix starting April 2, 2026.

Meet the key characters of The Sins of Kujo
The lead role of ‘Kenji Kujo’, a lawyer at Kujo Law Office, will be essayed by Yuga Yagira. He takes on troublesome and morally ambiguous cases, which will make the viewers question how far the law can be pushed. ‘Kenji’ will be joined by ‘Shinji Karasuma’, another talented elite lawyer, played by Hokuto Matsumura. Another key character in the series is ‘Hitomi Yakushimae’ essayed by Eliza Ikeda. She will portray a social worker who looks after criminals.
Keita Machida will step into the shoes of ‘Kengo Mibu’, who has ties to the underworld and brings troublesome requests to the show’s main lawyer, ‘Kujo’. Testing the bounds ‘Kujo’ is willing to break, the series will feature ‘Detective Arshiyama’ played by the extremely talented Takuma Otoo. The Detective harbours a grudge against ‘Kujo’ and ‘Mibu’ from a past incident. Last but not least, we have Tsuyoshi Muro, who will play ‘Kiyoshi Kyogoku’, the young boss of the Fushimi-gumi.

Apart from Yuya Yagira and Hokuto Matsumura, the cast will also feature Shunsuke Tanaka, Koyo Kurosaki, Ruka Ishikawa, Taiga Harada (Biscuit Brothers), Hinata Yoshida, Koki Kawasaki, Takara Sakumoto, Mitsusa Wada, Shingo Mizusawa, Shoichi Fukui, Megumi Ujiie, Shinji Rokkaku, Juri Suwa, So Okuno, Nuno Uraji, Mizuki Maehara, Ryoko Yuui and Takuma Nagao, Momoko Tanabe, So Morita, Kazuto Mokudai, Ryo Iwamatsu, Makiko Watanabe, Akiko Kikuchi, Shinobu Hasegawa (Sissonne), Yu Kashii and Ken Mitsuishi.
