Sir David Beckham has revealed how his children reacted after he was informed he was to be honoured for his services to sport and charitable causes last year
Sir David Beckham has revealed his children wanted to know what their ‘extra privileges’ would be as he shared their shocking response to his knighthood. The former Manchester United and England legend was honoured last year by King Charles during a service at Windsor Castle for his services to sport and charitable causes.
After years of dreaming, Beckham was finally able to say he was Sir David, with his wife, former singer Victoria, subsequently becoming known as Lady Beckham. However, while his children, estranged son Brooklyn, 27, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and daughter, 14, Harper already have had a life of luxury, they still asked one question.
In a new interview, Beckham has revealed what he’s been able to do with his new title.

“Do you know what? I wish it did. I really wish it did,” he said when asked if he changed his bank card and passport. During his appearance on talkSPORT Drive with Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent, Sir David added: “The only thing that changed was my notepaper that I send out to people, thank you letters. That’s the only thing that really changed.
“My kids turn around to me and said, ‘Dad, do we get any privileges like, any more?’ I know that’s what I said to them. I was like, well, apart from the ones that you’ve already got. Absolutely not. But no, thank you. It was unbelievable.”
And for Beckham, it appears that the day will be forever etched in his mind as one of the highlights of his life. He went on to add: “It was one of the best… probably the best day of my life, you know, other than obviously when my kids were born and when I got married.
“But no, it was special. And to receive that, it’s like you guys, you know, you just win an award for a great interview with someone that I admire.” When presented with his honour at Windsor Castle, Becks was joined by his wife, Victoria, as well as his proud parents, mum Sandra and dad Ted.
He joked that his four children could call him “Sir Dad”. While he was filled with nerves at the time, David said he was reassured by the presence of his loved ones. “To have my parents there today, to have my wife there to celebrate with my children, it makes it a very emotional day,” he said.
Speaking to The Sun, about his charity work, which he says he started aged 15 in Manchester, Sir David added: “So that important work will always continue. But today is just a day to savour as a family.”
Friends of the footballing icon who made his debut for Manchester United in 1995 told the Mirror at the time that Beckham will not “sit back idly” and will continue to focus on his charity work with the hopes of “trying to make a difference.”
They added to us: “There are some celebrities who get a knighthood and you don’t hear from them again… But David wants to use this incredible honour to champion the causes he believes in and raise their profile. He is determined to give back to the UK.”
